I am a contemporary visual artist working and living in Adelaide. My work is predominantly oil painting on hard supports or canvas but I also work with waste plastic and with textiles. I find different approaches make for livelier work. Both entries for this show began with drawing and small plastic iterations before being painted at a larger scale.
My subject matter moves between figuration, portraiture and large scale non representational paintings exploring colour.
ENTRIES
The two works I have entered are both painted in a kind of painterly shorthand exploiting the decisive mark and flashes of colour which allows great expression and liveliness across the picture plane and which gives just enough information about likeness and subject matter.
During COVID I have been making smaller works exploring people painted without contexts with brightly coloured backgrounds which give no clues about who they are, where they live or what their hopes and dreams might be. These two paintings are bigger and reinstate context allowing for a more narrative reading. They express my hope for a future where we can once again mingle freely, enjoy ourselves and travel without fear.
